Music is not a mere acoustic structure in time, or an auditory stimulus created to fit a well-controlled experimental design, but a phenomenon of subjective human experience. Such an experience is based on a highly complex set of cognitive and emotional operations which act interdependently in some parts, independently in others (Drake & Bertrand, 2001). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rhythm is defined as the serial relation between different acoustical events in a train of sounds, whereas meter involves a temporal invariance in terms of the regular recurrence of pulses or beats marking equal durational units, which can be organized as measures. Rhythm refers to the organization of events in time, such that they combine perceptually into groups and induce a sense of meter (Lerdahl & Jackendoff, 1983).\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the present study, the temporal processing of music is reflected through physiological resonance. The focus is on metric structures, the perceived temporal organization of musical patterns, which manifests phenomenologically as an alternation between accented and unaccented beats. This metric structure provides listeners with a temporal framework upon which expectations regarding musical events can be developed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

These expectations dramatically affect human perception, attention, and memory for the complex sequence of events in music (Jones & Boltz, 1989; Palmer & Krumhansl, 1990; Povel & Essens, 1985). Meter therefore represents a complex temporal Gestalt, since its perception requires information on accented and unaccented events and the integration of events over longer time periods. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
